Global Premiere! Official Release of National Standard for Strategic Black Powder

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China released GB/T 45203-2024 Recycled Black Mass for Lithium Ion Battery. This standard marks the first national standard for strategic black mass in China and globally, led by Guangdong Brunp Recycling Technology Co., Ltd.

Black mass is a key product in the recycling process of lithium-ion batteries. It is a black or gray-black powder containing one or more valuable components such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium, produced through resource processing steps including discharging, dismantling, crushing, and heat treatment of lithium-ion battery waste. The abundance of strategic resources like nickel, cobalt, and lithium in black powder is much higher than that in raw ores, making it a valuable "resource-rich mine."

With the rapid development of the global renewable energy industry and the substantial export of lithium batteries, one of the "new three exports," the total amount of lithium battery waste has gradually increased, leading to a continuous surge in demand for black mass in China. However, there has been a lack of national or industry standards for black mass products in circulation and testing. On the one hand, the varying technological proficiency among different enterprises has resulted in uneven product composition, making it impossible to establish uniform quality requirements for circulation. On the other hand, without standards and regulations, black mass has struggled to shed its waste label and cannot be reimported as a product, preventing the valuable "resource-rich mine" from returning to the country.

The release of this standard standardizes indicators, projects, and parameters such as the chemical composition of the product, providing the industry with national-level standards and a basis to ensure product quality meets green and environmental protection requirements. It facilitates compliant trade and importation of products, promoting green, low-carbon, and sustainable development in the renewable energy industry.
